Need

Familieab 5 J.
Something you need to live: food, drink, clothing, a home, health. In contrast to wants, which are nice but not essential.

Needs (Bedürfnisse) are things you really need to live and stay healthy: food, water, a roof over your head, clothing, medical care and education.

In the 50-30-20 rule, needs fall under the 50%: rent, groceries, electricity, insurance. These are expenses you can't simply leave out.

For children: practise it playfully: "Is an ice cream a want or a need?" (A want!) "Is a warm jumper in winter a want or a need?" (A need!)

Did you know? Maslow's hierarchy of needs shows: only once basic needs are met do people strive for higher needs such as education and self-fulfilment.
