Bitcoin

Wirtschaftab 13 J.
The first and best-known cryptocurrency, invented in 2009 by “Satoshi Nakamoto” (a pseudonym). Limited to 21 million coins. Its value fluctuates strongly.

Bitcoin is the first decentralised digital currency. It was launched in 2009 by an anonymous person or group under the pseudonym "Satoshi Nakamoto".

How does Bitcoin work? Transactions are grouped into blocks and stored on the blockchain – a public, tamper-proof ledger maintained by thousands of computers worldwide.

Limited supply: there will never be more than 21 million bitcoins. This artificial scarcity is one of the reasons why the price has risen in the long run – but it also causes extreme fluctuations.

Did you know? 14% of Germans own cryptocurrencies. In 2024 the German state of Saxony sold around 50,000 seized bitcoins for about €2.6 billion.
