Bootstrapping

Gründerab 13 J.
Starting a company without outside capital: out of your own pocket, growing with customer revenue. Slower but more independent than with investors.

Bootstrapping means building a company entirely from your own resources – without investors, without a bank loan, without a business angel.

Advantages:

✅ You keep 100% of the shares
✅ No dependence on investors
✅ Focus on customers (instead of investors' wishes)
✅ Forces discipline and efficiency

Disadvantages:

❌ Slow growth
❌ The financial risk lies entirely with you
❌ Can be difficult with capital-intensive business models

Well-known bootstrap successes: Mailchimp (email marketing, sold for 12 billion dollars in 2021 – never took a cent from investors), Basecamp (project management), GitHub (initially).

Did you know? Mailchimp was bootstrapped in 2001 and sold to Intuit in 2021 for $12 billion – without ever taking a single investor dollar. The founders still owned 100% of the company.
