Standing order vs. direct debit

Bankingab 5 J.
Standing order: YOU regularly transfer a fixed amount (e.g. rent). Direct debit: the RECIPIENT collects the money (e.g. electricity, Netflix). Both automatic – but you control them differently.

Two automatic payment methods – but with important differences:

Standing order (Dauerauftrag):

• Who triggers it? YOU give the order (at your bank)
• Amount: always the same (fixed amount)
• Changes: only YOU can change or cancel it
• Typical for: rent, savings transfers, pocket money for children
• Control: full control – you decide everything

Direct debit (Lastschrift, SEPA mandate):

• Who triggers it? The RECIPIENT debits your account
• Amount: can vary (electricity: sometimes €80, sometimes €95)
• Changes: the recipient determines the amount
• Typical for: electricity, gas, internet, Netflix, insurance, gym
• Protection: 8-week right to reverse (for unauthorised debits: 13 months)

Which is better?

• Fixed amounts (rent): standing order (you stay in control)
• Varying amounts (electricity): direct debit (the amount adjusts)

Did you know? Standing order: YOU are in control (fixed amount). Direct debit: the RECIPIENT collects (variable). Direct debit advantage: 8-week right to reverse. Standing order advantage: full control.
