Securities account (depot)

Investierenab 13 J.
An account at a bank or broker where securities (stocks, ETFs, bonds) are held. There are special junior accounts for children.

A Depot (securities account) is a special account for your investments. While your money sits in your current account, your shares, ETFs and bonds sit in your securities account.

Where to open one? At a bank (Sparkasse, Commerzbank) or an online broker (Trade Republic, Scalable Capital, ING). Online brokers are usually much cheaper – no custody fees and lower order costs.

Junior account: for children under 18, parents can open a junior securities account. The parents manage it, the child is the owner. Advantage: the child's own saver's allowance (€1,000/year) can be used.

Did you know? The number of securities accounts in Germany has risen by more than 50% in the last 5 years – from 12 to more than 18 million. Young investors (18–35) in particular are driving the trend.
