Dividend

Investierenab 13 J.
A company's distribution of profits to its shareholders. Not all companies pay dividends – some prefer to reinvest their profits in growth.

When a company makes a profit, it can distribute that profit to its shareholders – this is the dividend. It is usually paid once a year per share.

Example: in 2026 the Allianz share pays a dividend of approx. €13.80 per share. If you own 10 shares, you get €138 – simply for holding the shares.

Dividend yield: the dividend relative to the share price. With a price of €280 and a dividend of €13.80: 13.80 ÷ 280 × 100 = 4.9% dividend yield.

Important: not all companies pay dividends. Growth companies like Amazon prefer to reinvest their profits in the business. ETFs come in accumulating (dividends are reinvested automatically) and distributing versions.

Did you know? In 2025, the 40 DAX companies paid out a total of around €54 billion in dividends – a record, even though profits had fallen 21% the year before.
