Erasmus finances

Jugendab 13 J.
A semester abroad with Erasmus+: a monthly grant of €600–750 (depending on the country), plus German Auslands-BAföG and child benefit. Here's how to finance a semester in Europe.

Financing an Erasmus semester abroad (from Germany):

Erasmus+ grant:

• Group 1 (expensive countries: Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, UK): €600/month
• Group 2 (mid-range countries: Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece): €540/month
• Group 3 (cheaper countries: Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Turkey): €490/month

Additional funding:

✅ BAföG for studying abroad: higher rates than domestic BAföG + travel cost allowance + tuition fee allowance
✅ Child benefit: continues (€259/month)
✅ Side job abroad: as an EU citizen you may work in any EU country

Tip: ALWAYS apply for BAföG for studying abroad – the income limits are higher than for normal BAföG. Many who get nothing at home receive support abroad.

Did you know? More than 650,000 students take part in Erasmus+ every year. Germany is the most popular destination – and at the same time sends the most students abroad.
