Financial education as a school subject

Trendsab 5 J.
German schools offer hardly any financial education. 75% of young people find financial knowledge important, but only 12% feel well prepared. The movement is growing – some federal states are taking action.

Germany has a financial education problem. While pupils learn to analyse poems and sketch curves, nobody explains taxes, insurance or retirement provision to them.

The figures:

• 75% of 14–24-year-olds consider financial knowledge "important" or "very important" (Association of German Banks study)
• Only 12% feel "well prepared" by school for financial decisions
• According to the OECD, 38% of 15-year-olds lack basic financial literacy

What's happening:

• Baden-Württemberg has introduced "Economics/Career and Study Orientation" as a compulsory subject
• North Rhine-Westphalia plans economics lessons from 2025
• Initiatives such as the "Finanzführerschein" (financial driving licence) and "My Finance Coach" supplement lessons

Until then: platforms like SaveFoxy close the gap – with 60 age-appropriate learning modules that teach what's missing at school.

Did you know? The viral tweet “I'm almost 18 and have no idea about taxes, rent or insurance. But I can write a poem analysis. In 4 languages.” (Naina K., 2015) sparked a nationwide debate in Germany about financial education in schools.
