Talking about money as a couple

Familieab 9 J.
Money is the most common source of conflict in relationships. Here's how to talk openly about finances: regular money dates, the 3-account model, defining shared goals.

How to have successful money conversations as a couple:

1. Regular "money dates":

• Once a month, fixed date (e.g. the 1st Sunday)
• Relaxed atmosphere (coffee, sofa, no stress)
• Talk together about income, expenses, savings goals

2. The 3-account model:

• Account 1: your personal account (salary, your own expenses)
• Account 2: your partner's account (salary, their own expenses)
• Account 3: joint account (rent, groceries, joint saving)
• Both transfer a fixed amount (in proportion to income) into the joint account

3. Shared goals:

• "In 3 years we want to have saved €20,000 for a deposit"
• "By the end of the year we'll pay off the consumer loan"
• Shared goals create team spirit instead of confrontation

Golden rule: no accusations ("You spend too much!"), but teamwork ("How can WE reach our goal?").

Did you know? According to surveys, money is the most common cause of arguments between partners – ahead of housework, parenting and sex. Couples who talk about money regularly split up less often.
