Financial resilience
Financial resilience means being able to withstand a financial blow without falling into existential hardship.
The 3 pillars:
1. Liquidity reserve (emergency fund):
• 3–6 months' net salary in overnight money
• Available immediately (not in shares/ETFs!)
• For: job loss, car repairs, washing machine, illness
2. Insurance cover (risk transfer):
• Liability: protects against claims worth millions (from €3/month!)
• Occupational disability insurance: protects your income
• Term life insurance: protects your family if you die
• Health insurance: compulsory in Germany
3. Diversification (spreading your wealth):
• Don't put everything on one card: different asset classes (shares, overnight money, possibly property)
• Not just one employer: build up a side income
• Not just one country: invest worldwide (MSCI World instead of just the DAX)
The reality in Germany:
• Only 28% of households have a complete emergency plan
• 31% could NOT cover an unexpected expense of €1,000
• 72% would be in financial difficulty after a blow of fate
