Voluntary social year (FSJ) and money

Jugendab 5 J.
Germany's voluntary social year: pocket money of €250–450/month + often free accommodation and meals. Child benefit continues. Covered by social insurance – and it counts towards your pension.

Everything you need to know about the finances of a voluntary social year (FSJ) in Germany:

What you get:

• Pocket money: €250–450/month (depending on the placement)
• Accommodation/meals: often provided free of charge (or a subsidy)
• Child benefit: continues (€259/month)
• Social insurance: fully insured (health, pension, long-term care, accident)
• 25 education days: seminars, workshops (free of charge)

What it brings financially:

✅ Pension entitlements: the FSJ counts as a contribution period
✅ Waiting semesters for university admission
✅ Orientation: what do I want to do for a living?
✅ Life experience and a network

Is the money enough? If accommodation/meals are provided: yes, for a frugal lifestyle. Pocket money + child benefit = €500–700/month. With your own flat it gets tight – then apply for BAB or housing benefit.

Did you know? Around 100,000 young people in Germany do an FSJ or Federal Volunteer Service every year. The most popular areas: care (28%), children & youth (24%), culture (12%).
