Money scripts
Money scripts (Geld-Scripts) are deep-rooted beliefs about money that we usually adopt unconsciously from our parents and our surroundings.
4 types of money scripts (according to Klontz & Klontz):
1. Money avoidance:
"Money is bad", "Rich people are immoral", "I don't deserve money"
Consequence: sabotages your own financial success
2. Money worship:
"More money solves all problems", "I'll never have enough"
Consequence: excessive focus on money, workaholism
3. Money status:
"My worth is determined by my wealth", "I have to look rich"
Consequence: excessive consumption, debt for status symbols
4. Money vigilance:
"You always have to save", "Spending is wrong", "You don't talk about money"
Consequence: excessive saving, guilt when spending, no communication
What you can do: recognise your own money scripts. Ask yourself: what did my parents teach me about money? What sayings about money did I hear as a child? Are these beliefs helpful – or are they holding me back?
