Money and siblings

Kinderab 5 J.
When siblings argue about money: different pocket money by age, envy of older siblings, “That's unfair!” How parents can create fairness without making everything identical.

Typical sibling money conflicts and solutions:

"Why does my brother get more pocket money?"

• Explain: older children have higher expenses (school supplies, outings)
• Show the pocket money table – the amounts rise with age
• Promise: "When you're as old as your brother, you'll get just as much"

"I want a toy like my sister's too!"

• Don't automatically buy the same thing – every child has their own wishes
• Instead: "What are YOU saving for? What's YOUR wish?"
• Children may have different things – fairness isn't sameness

"My brother stole/borrowed my money!"

• Clear rule: touching someone else's money is off limits
• If lending: write it down (amount, repayment date)
• Each child has their own money box/piggy bank in a safe place

Basic principle: fairness doesn't mean "everyone gets the same". It means: "everyone gets what they need at their age."

Did you know? First-born children earn a higher income on average than their younger siblings. A possible explanation: they take on responsibility early.
