Managing money gifts
Kinderab 5 J.
What to do with birthday or Christmas money? The 3-part rule: spend one part, save one part, invest one part for later.
How children learn to divide up money gifts sensibly:
The 3-part rule:
• Spend 1/3 straight away: the child may buy something – experiencing the joy of money
• Save 1/3: put it aside for a bigger savings goal
• Invest 1/3 for the long term: in a savings account or junior securities account (parents can help here)
Example: a child gets €60 for their birthday: €20 can be spent straight away, €20 goes into the piggy bank for the new Lego set, €20 goes into the savings account.
This split teaches three important concepts at once: enjoying, planning and providing for the future.
Did you know? Children in Germany receive €150–250 a year for Christmas and birthdays. Educators recommend: save 50%, keep 50% to spend freely – so children learn both sides.
