Comparing current accounts

Bankingab 5 J.
Germany's most-searched money question: which current account is best? Free accounts at DKB, ING, comdirect. What to look out for and how to switch.

How to find the best current account (Germany):

The most important criteria:

• Account fee: €0 (direct banks) to €12/month (branch banks)
• Free cash withdrawals: at how many machines? Worldwide?
• Cards: girocard + Visa/Mastercard included?
• App: modern banking app with real-time notifications?
• Overdraft interest: how expensive is overdrawing?

Top recommendations (2026):

• DKB: free with incoming payments, Visa with free cash withdrawals worldwide
• ING: free from €700 incoming payments, Visa + girocard
• comdirect: free with incoming payments or 3 transactions/month
• N26: free basic account, modern app, 3–5 withdrawals/month

Switching: use the account switching service (legally required since 2016, free of charge). The new bank takes over standing orders and informs payment partners.

Did you know? “Girokonto Vergleich” (current account comparison) is one of the most-searched financial terms on Google in Germany. Yet only about 7% of Germans switch their current account each year.
