How to get out of expensive mobile contracts: notice period 3 months before the end of the contract. In Germany, since 2022 automatic renewals only run for 1 month (instead of 12).
Cancelling a mobile phone contract in Germany – here's how:
Since December 2021: after the minimum term, contracts only renew for one month at a time (no longer 12 months!). You can then cancel at any time with 1 month's notice.
During the minimum term: the cancellation must arrive 3 months before the end of the contract. By email, letter or the cancellation button on the website (mandatory since July 2022).
Tip: after cancelling, call the same provider – you often get a better offer (a "retention offer"). Alternatively: prepaid or monthly cancellable plans are often cheaper.
Did you know? Since December 2021, automatically renewed contracts in Germany can be cancelled with just 1 month's notice (previously 3 months). That saves many people €100–200 a year.
