Hang Seng

Börseab 13 J.
The most important Chinese/Hong Kong stock index. Includes Alibaba, Tencent, HSBC, Xiaomi. Strongly influenced by Chinese government policy and regulation.

The Hang Seng Index (HSI) is the most important stock index for Hong Kong and Chinese companies.

Well-known companies: Alibaba, Tencent (WeChat, gaming), HSBC, Xiaomi, Meituan, BYD (electric cars), China Mobile.

Why so volatile?

• Regulatory risk: the Chinese government can regulate entire sectors overnight (2021: the tech crackdown destroyed billions in market value)
• Geopolitics: tensions over Taiwan, US sanctions, trade conflict
• Property crisis: the Evergrande collapse in 2021 shook the market
• Capital controls: restrictions for foreign investors

For German investors: China is already included in the MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (~25%). Individual investments in Chinese shares are only advisable for experienced investors because of the regulatory risk.

Did you know? When the Chinese government regulated the private tutoring sector overnight in 2021, companies like New Oriental Education lost 90% of their market value – within a few days.
