Children's questions about money
Answers to the 5 toughest questions children ask about money:
1. "Are we poor?"
• Don't say: "We don't talk about that." (Creates fear and taboo)
• Say: "We have enough for everything we need. Some families have more, some less. That's normal. What matters is that we're together and handle our money wisely."
2. "Why can't we go on holiday?"
• Say: "We're saving for other important things right now. But we can still do great stuff – what would you like to do this weekend?" (Focus on possibilities instead of limitations)
3. "Why does Max have an iPhone and I don't?"
• Say: "Different families spend their money on different things. We've decided to use our money differently right now. If a new phone is important to you, we can save for it together."
4. "Why do you always have to work?"
• Say: "I work because it earns the money we use to live, eat and do nice things. And I like working – I enjoy [what you do]. When you're grown up, you'll find something you enjoy too."
5. "What happens if you run out of money?"
• Say: "You don't need to worry about that. Mum/Dad make sure we always have enough. And if things ever get difficult, there's help – in Germany, nobody is left on their own."
Basic rule: be honest, but don't frighten your child. Children need to feel sure that their parents have everything under control – even when money is tight.
