Forgot to apply for child benefit?

Alltagab 5 J.
Forgot to apply for child benefit in Germany? You'll ONLY get it 6 months retroactively – after that the entitlement lapses! €250/month. Act quickly – here's how to apply.

Claiming child benefit (Kindergeld) retroactively in Germany – here's how:

The problem: child benefit is ONLY paid 6 months retroactively. If you wait 8 months after the birth, you lose 2 months × €250 = €500. Gone for good.

Act immediately:

1. Online application: familienkasse.de → "Kindergeld beantragen" (with BundID or ELSTER certificate)
2. Or by post: print form KG1, fill it in and send it with the birth certificate to the Familienkasse (family benefits office) in your town
3. Processing time: 4–8 weeks
4. Retroactive: max. 6 months

Don't forget after the 18th birthday either:

• Child benefit continues until 25 during training/studies
• BUT: the Familienkasse has to KNOW about it! Submit a certificate of enrolment
• If you forget: €250/month gone

Special case FSJ/BFD (voluntary social year/federal volunteer service):

• Child benefit continues during voluntary service
• But: the Familienkasse must be informed (certificate from the placement organisation)

Did you know? Estimates suggest that more than €200 million in child benefit is lost every year – because parents apply too late or not at all.
