€250 a month per child – for free! How to apply for German child benefit: online at the Family Benefits Office, upload the birth certificate, done. Max. 6 months retroactively. Don't forget!

Applying for child benefit (Kindergeld) in Germany – here's how:

Who gets child benefit?

• All parents resident in Germany
• Regardless of the parents' income
• €250 per child per month (uniform since 2023)

For how long?

• Automatically until the 18th birthday
• Until 25 during vocational training, university, voluntary service (FSJ/BFD)
• Without limit for a severe disability (occurring before 25)

Application:

• Online: at familienkasse.de (with BundID/ELSTER)
• Or by post: print the form, fill it in, send it with the birth certificate
• To whom? The Familienkasse of the Employment Agency
• When? Ideally right after the birth. Retroactively max. 6 months!

Tip: child benefit is paid into the parents' account. Set up a standing order that transfers the €250 straight into the child's junior securities account or savings account. That way you never forget and automatically build wealth for your child.

Did you know? Child benefit is paid until the 25th birthday if the child is studying. Many parents forget to extend the application after the 18th birthday and give away €250/month. Send the enrolment certificate to the Family Benefits Office!
