Nursery (Kita) costs

Alltagab 9 J.
Nursery places in Germany cost €0–800/month – depending on state, city and income. Berlin: free. Hamburg: €0–600. Munich: up to €800. Meal fees usually come on top.

The cost of a nursery place in Germany varies enormously depending on where you live and your income.

Free nursery: Berlin (completely free of fees since 2018), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg (5 hours/day free).

Income-related fees: most cities stagger fees by income: low earners pay little or nothing, high earners up to €800/month.

Typical extra costs:

• Meal money: €50–100/month
• Craft money/materials: €5–15/month
• Outings: €20–50/year

Tax-deductible: childcare costs can be deducted as special expenses: 2/3 of the costs, max. €4,000 per child per year.

Did you know? Compared with other OECD countries, Germany spends little on early childhood education. In Scandinavia, nurseries are free almost everywhere and are considered part of the education system.
