Consumer debt vs. building wealth

Sparenab 9 J.
Every euro has two options: being consumed (gone) or invested (growing). €200/month on consumption vs. €200/month in an ETF: after 20 years = €0 vs. ~€100,000.

Perhaps the most important financial insight: every euro can either be spent or invested – and the long-term difference is gigantic.

The two-path calculation:

Path A – consumption (€200/month on "little things"):

• Daily coffee to go: €3.50 × 22 days = €77
• Lunch to go instead of cooking yourself: €8 × 15 days = €120
• Streaming subscriptions you hardly use: €30
• Total: approx. €227/month
• After 20 years: €0 (spent, gone, forgotten)

Path B – investing (€200/month in an MSCI World ETF):

• Your own thermos flask, meal prep, 1 streaming subscription instead of 3
• €200/month in an ETF savings plan at a 7% return
• After 10 years: €34,600
• After 20 years: €104,000
• After 30 years: €243,000

The message: it's not about giving up everything. It's about deciding consciously what you spend your money on. The coffee to go tastes good for 5 minutes. €104,000 tastes good for a lifetime.

Did you know? The “latte factor” (coined by author David Bach) shows that even small daily expenses add up to huge amounts over decades. €5/day = €1,825/year = €36,500 in 20 years (without returns).
