Sickness daily allowance insurance

Versicherungab 13 J.
In Germany, continued pay ends after 6 weeks of illness. Then the health insurer pays only 70% of gross pay (max. about €120/day). Sickness daily allowance insurance can close the gap.

Daily sickness allowance insurance (Krankentagegeld) protects you in case you're ill for longer than 6 weeks in Germany.

What happens after 6 weeks:

• Weeks 1–6: your employer continues to pay your full salary (continued pay)
• From week 7: statutory health insurance (GKV) pays sickness benefit: 70% of gross, max. 90% of net. Upper limit: approx. €120/day (approx. €3,600/month gross)
• Maximum: 78 weeks of sickness benefit for the same illness

The problem: if you earn €5,000 gross, you only get approx. €3,500 sickness benefit (minus social security contributions: approx. €3,000 net). Your normal net pay: approx. €3,100. Gap: approx. €100–500/month – depending on salary.

Daily sickness allowance insurance: closes this gap. Cost: €10–30/month depending on occupation and amount. Especially worthwhile for high earners and the self-employed (who get NO statutory sickness benefit AT ALL!).

Did you know? Self-employed people with statutory health insurance must add sickness daily allowance separately. Without it, they have no income at all from the first day of illness – an enormous risk.
