Lifestyle inflation

Psychologieab 9 J.✍️ Community
When your spending grows with your income: pay rise → bigger flat, more expensive car, more shopping. In the end you save no more than before despite earning more.

Lifestyle inflation ("lifestyle creep") is the effect whereby people automatically increase their spending as their income rises – instead of saving the difference.

Typical pattern:

• Pay rise +€500/month
• Bigger flat: +€200
• Better car: +€150 (leasing)
• Eating out more: +€100
• Other: +€50
• Saved: €0

Antidote: with every pay rise, automatically transfer at least 50% of the extra amount to your savings plan (by standing order). That way your standard of living still rises – but your savings grow too.

Did you know? Studies suggest that above an annual income of about €75,000, people don't become significantly happier. More money brings more comfort, but not automatically more life satisfaction.
