Talking to children about money

Familieab 5 J.
Tips for parents: how do you break the money taboo and have age-appropriate conversations about finances? Openly, honestly and without stirring up fears.

How to talk to your children about money:

1. Start early: even 4-year-olds understand that money is exchanged for things. Take them shopping and explain simply.

2. Use everyday situations: "The bread costs 3 euros. How much change do I get from 5 euros?"

3. Be honest: instead of "That's too expensive", say "We haven't planned a budget for that right now." That shows: money isn't unlimited, but it can be planned.

4. Don't stir up fears: adults' money worries aren't for children's ears. Stay matter-of-fact and confident.

5. Be a role model: children learn more by watching than by being lectured. If you handle money consciously yourself, so will your child.

Did you know? According to a University of Cambridge study, basic financial habits are formed by the age of 7. Early conversations about money have a demonstrably positive effect.
