Consuming sustainably
Consuming more sustainably – often even cheaper:
Can be done right away:
✅ Buy second-hand: clothes, furniture, electronics. 50–80% cheaper than new
✅ Repair: repair cafés (free!), iFixit for instructions
✅ Drink tap water: 0.2 cents/litre instead of 50 cents for mineral water
✅ Buy regional and seasonal: strawberries in June instead of December (cheaper!)
✅ Less meat: 1–2 vegetarian days/week saves €30–50/month
One-off switches:
✅ Green electricity: often only €5–10/month more than normal electricity
✅ Sustainable bank: GLS, Tomorrow (€0–5/month)
✅ Cloth bags instead of plastic bags: a one-off €2, lasts for years
✅ Reusable bottle instead of disposable: a one-off €15, saves €200/year
The biggest insight: the most sustainable consumption is often the consumption that DOESN'T happen. Before you buy anything: "Do I really need this?" If not: don't buy it – saves money AND resources.
