Return (yield)

Investierenab 13 J.
The income from an investment as a percentage. Shows how much profit you've made on your invested money – after costs.

The return (Rendite) is the measure of an investment's success. It shows what percentage of profit (or loss) you have made over a certain period.

Calculation: (final value − initial value) ÷ initial value × 100. If €10,000 becomes €10,700 after one year, the return is 7%.

Average returns:

• Savings book: 0.01–0.1% per year
• Overnight money: 1–3% per year
• Fixed-term deposit: 2–4% per year
• Bonds: 2–5% per year
• Shares/ETFs: 7–9% per year (long-term average, with fluctuations)

Important: a higher return always means a higher risk. There is no risk-free investment with a 10% return – if someone promises you that, it is very likely a scam.

Did you know? Since its launch in 1969, the MSCI World index has achieved an average annual return of about 7.5% (about 5% adjusted for inflation). That means €10,000 invested in 1969 would be worth more than €500,000 today.
