Savings rate

Sparenab 9 J.
The share of income that is saved. Calculation: (income − expenses) ÷ income × 100. A good savings rate is at least 20%.

The savings rate shows what percentage of your income you save. The formula is simple: (income minus expenses) divided by income times 100.

Example: with €2,500 net and €2,000 in expenses you save €500. Your savings rate: 500 ÷ 2,500 × 100 = 20%. That is a very good figure.

For orientation: the 50-30-20 rule recommends a 20% savings rate. The German average is approx. 11%. Financial experts say: any savings rate above 0% is better than none. If you're just starting out, you can begin with 5% and slowly increase it.

Did you know? Germany's average savings rate in 2024 was 11.2% (Federal Statistical Office). The Swiss save much more at over 18%, while Britons manage only about 4%.
