Basket of goods

Wirtschaftab 9 J.
The roughly 700 products and services whose prices are measured monthly to calculate inflation: from bread and rent to streaming subscriptions.

The Warenkorb (basket of goods) is a representative selection of products and services intended to reflect the consumption habits of the German population.

Examples from the basket (2024):

• Food: bread, butter, milk, eggs, beef, apples, potatoes
• Housing: rent, electricity, gas, water, furniture
• Mobility: petrol/diesel, bus/train tickets, car repairs
• Technology: smartphone, laptop, TV, internet plan
• Leisure: cinema, streaming service, gym, holidays
• Clothing: jeans, trainers, winter jacket
• Health: medication, doctor's visits, glasses

Weighting: not every product counts equally. Rent (32%) weighs much more than shoes (0.5%). The weighting reflects what Germans spend their money on on average.

Updates: the basket is adjusted every 5 years. New products come in (e-scooters, oat milk), old ones drop out (DVD rental, phone boxes).

Did you know? In 2020, face masks were added to the basket of goods for the first time – in response to the COVID pandemic. They were later removed when the mask requirement ended.
