Vocational training allowance (BAB)

Jugendab 9 J.
State support in Germany for apprentices who no longer live with their parents. Similar to BAföG, but for trainees. Does not have to be paid back!

BAB (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, vocational training allowance) is a grant from the German Employment Agency for apprentices who have to move away from home for their training.

Who gets BAB?

• Apprentices in company-based/non-company-based training
• Who no longer (can) live with their parents
• Whose training allowance + parental income isn't enough

How much? It depends on the parents' income, your own pay and rent. It can be up to €800/month.

The best part: BAB is a grant, not a loan – you don't have to pay anything back! (Unlike BAföG, where half is repaid.)

How to apply: at the Employment Agency where you're training. Ideally BEFORE the training starts.

Did you know? BAB goes to apprentices who can no longer live with their parents. Maximum: about €900/month. Apply at the employment agency – BEFORE the training starts.
