Blue chips

Börseab 13 J.
The biggest and most stable companies on the stock market: Apple, Microsoft, SAP, Siemens. Considered relatively safe investments with stable dividends.

Blue chips are established large companies with a long history, stable profits and often regular dividend payments. The term comes from poker – blue chips had the highest value.

Typical blue chips in Germany: SAP, Siemens, Allianz, BASF, Deutsche Telekom, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Bayer – all DAX companies with decades of history.

Advantages: less volatile than small caps, regular dividends, high liquidity (easy to buy/sell). Disadvantage: less growth potential than young, small companies.

For beginners: an ETF on the DAX or MSCI World mainly contains blue chips – so you automatically invest in the most stable companies in the world.

Did you know? The term comes from poker: blue chips had the highest value. In Germany it often refers to the 40 DAX companies, with a combined market capitalisation of more than €1.8 trillion.
