BRICS countries

Internationalab 13 J.
Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa – and since 2024 also Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Together more than 45% of the world's population and 30% of economic output.

BRICS is an alliance of emerging economies seen as a counterweight to Western dominance in the global economy.

The members:

• Brazil: largest economy in South America
• Russia: energy superpower (oil, gas)
• India: fastest-growing large economy
• China: second-largest economy in the world
• South Africa: largest economy in Africa
• Since 2024: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE

Why relevant? BRICS countries are discussing their own currency as an alternative to the US dollar. That could fundamentally change the global financial system – for German savers and investors too.

Did you know? The BRICS countries represent more than 45% of the world's population and more than 30% of global economic output. In 2001, when the term was coined, it was only 8%.
