Fractional shares

Investierenab 9 J.
Instead of buying a whole share (e.g. Amazon for $180), many brokers let you buy fractions – e.g. 0.1 Amazon shares for $18. Ideal for savings plans.

Fractional shares (Bruchstücke) let you buy portions of shares or ETFs – even if you don't have enough money for a whole share.

How it works:

• You want to invest €50/month in an ETF that costs €120 per unit
• Your broker buys 0.4167 units for you
• Next month: another 0.4167 units
• After 3 months: 1.25 units (you have more than a whole one)

Where are fractional shares available (Germany)?

• Trade Republic: yes, from €1
• Scalable Capital: yes, via savings plan
• ING: yes, via savings plan
• Comdirect: yes, via savings plan

Important to know: fractional shares can't be transferred via the exchange. When you switch securities accounts, they are sold automatically. That's not a problem for savings plans, though.

Did you know? Before fractional shares, you would have had to buy a whole Berkshire Hathaway A share – for more than $600,000. Today you can own a tiny fraction for €1.
