Demographic change

Wirtschaftab 9 J.
Germany is getting older and shrinking: fewer and fewer workers finance more and more pensioners. Consequences: pensions fall, social contributions rise, skills shortages.

Demographic change is one of Germany's biggest financial challenges.

The figures:

• 1960: 6 workers financed 1 pensioner
• 2024: 2 workers finance 1 pensioner
• 2040: 1.5 workers per pensioner (forecast)
• Median age: 44 years (one of the highest in the world)

Consequences for your finances:

❌ Statutory pension: will replace less and less of your last salary (the "pension level" falls)
❌ Social contributions: will rise (more pensioners = higher contributions)
❌ Taxes: could rise to finance the gap
✅ Labour market: skills shortage = better negotiating position for employees

What you should do:

✅ Build up private retirement provision (ETF savings plan!)
✅ Calculate and close your pension gap
✅ Don't rely solely on the statutory pension

Did you know? Japan is 10–15 years ahead of Germany in demographic change. There, adults wear more nappies than babies – a symbol of the ageing society.
