Digital euro
The digital euro is a planned digital means of payment from the European Central Bank – a kind of digital cash.
What is planned?
• Direct access for all citizens – even without a bank account
• Free of charge for basic payments
• Works offline (like cash, even without internet)
• Cash-like privacy (no data for small amounts)
• A limit per person (e.g. €3,000) to prevent bank runs
What is it NOT? Not a Bitcoin replacement, not a cryptocurrency, not an investment. The digital euro is always worth €1 – no price fluctuations.
Timetable: the ECB has been in the "preparation phase" since 2023. Introduction 2027–2028 at the earliest, depending on political decisions.
