Deposit protection

Bankingab 9 J.
Your money in bank accounts is legally protected up to €100,000 per bank and customer. If the bank goes bust, you get your money back within 7 days.

Deposit protection (Einlagensicherung) is a protective shield for your money in bank accounts. It guarantees that you get your money back even if your bank becomes insolvent.

Statutory protection in the EU:

• €100,000 per bank and per customer
• Applies to: current account, overnight money, fixed-term deposits, savings book
• Payout within 7 working days
• Applies in ALL EU countries

What is NOT protected? Shares, ETFs, bonds in your securities account – these belong to you as segregated assets and are not part of the insolvency estate. So the contents of your securities account are protected separately.

Many German banks offer voluntary deposit protection beyond the statutory €100,000 (sometimes up to several million euros).

Did you know? During the 2008 financial crisis, Chancellor Merkel personally guaranteed: “Savings deposits are safe.” Since then EU deposit protection has been raised from €20,000 to €100,000.
