Natural hazards insurance

Versicherungab 13 J.
Protection against natural disasters: floods, inundation, earthquakes, landslides, snow load. Not included in normal buildings/contents insurance in Germany – it must be taken out separately.

Natural hazards insurance (Elementarversicherung) protects against damage caused by natural events that normal buildings or household contents insurance does NOT cover.

What is insured?

• Flooding and high water
• Heavy rain and sewage backflow
• Earthquakes
• Landslides and subsidence
• Snow load and avalanches

Why important? The 2021 flood disaster in the Ahr valley showed: without natural hazards insurance you're left with hundreds of thousands of euros of damage. Only approx. 50% of buildings in Germany have natural hazards cover.

Costs: €100–500/year depending on location and risk (houses near rivers are much more expensive). The federal government is discussing compulsory insurance.

Did you know? The 2021 Ahr valley flood disaster in Germany caused more than €33 billion in damage. Only about half of the affected buildings had natural hazards insurance.
