ELektronische STeuerERklärung: the tax office's official online portal in Germany. Free, but not very user-friendly. Alternatives: tax apps such as WISO or Taxfix.
ELSTER (ELektronische STeuerERklärung, electronic tax return) is the official online portal of the German tax administration. You use it to submit your tax return digitally.
Advantages:
✅ Completely free of charge
✅ Direct transmission to the tax office
✅ Previous year's data can be carried over
Disadvantages:
❌ The interface isn't intuitive
❌ No tips or explanations
❌ No automatic tax optimisation
Better alternative for beginners: tax apps (WISO Steuer: approx. €30, Taxfix: approx. €40, SteuerBot: approx. €25) guide you through the return with questions and answers and give saving tips.
Did you know? More than 25 million tax returns are submitted via ELSTER every year. Still, many people use paper forms – processing then often takes twice as long.
