Parental allowance (Elterngeld)

Arbeitab 13 J.
A German state benefit for parents after a birth: 65–67% of net income, min. €300, max. €1,800/month. Basic parental allowance: 12+2 months.

Elterngeld (parental allowance) supports parents in Germany who work less or not at all after the birth. It replaces part of the lost income.

Amount: 65–67% of net income before the birth. At least €300, at most €1,800 per month. Low earners (under €1,240 net) receive up to 100%.

Duration:

• Basic parental allowance: 12 months for one parent + 2 partner months = max. 14 months
• ElterngeldPlus: twice the duration, half the amount – ideal for part-time work alongside childcare

Tax class trick: switch to tax class III 7+ months before maternity leave (for married couples). This increases net income and thus the parental allowance by €200–400/month.

Did you know? Parental allowance was introduced in 2007 and has significantly increased fathers' involvement in childcare: in 2006 only 3% of fathers took parental leave, today more than 25% do.
