Splitting your first salary

Jugendab 9 J.
Your first salary is a milestone! Here's how to split it wisely: fixed costs, saving, enjoying. The 50/30/20 rule as a starting point.

How to handle your first salary:

Step 1: list your fixed costs. Rent, electricity, internet, insurance, phone. That's your 50%.

Step 2: set up a savings standing order. On payday, automatically move 20% into a separate account. Pay yourself first!

Step 3: enjoy the rest. The remaining 30% is for leisure, eating out, hobbies. Without a guilty conscience.

Checklist for career starters (Germany):

✅ Take out liability insurance (from €50/year)
✅ Build an emergency fund (3 months' salary)
✅ Apply for capital-forming benefits (VL) from your employer
✅ Set up an exemption order with your bank
✅ Start an ETF savings plan (even if only €25/month)

Did you know? The recommended split: 50% fixed costs, 20% saving (ETF + emergency fund), 30% leisure. Anyone who starts a savings plan IMMEDIATELY with their first salary gets an unbeatable head start.
