Ex-dividend date
BörseErwachsene
The day from which a share trades “without dividend”. If you buy BEFORE this day, you get the dividend. If you buy on the ex-date or later, you don't.
The ex-dividend date (ex-date) determines who gets the next dividend.
How it works:
• Record date: the cut-off date on which it is established who is a shareholder
• Ex-date: 1 trading day before the record date. From this day on the share trades "ex dividend"
• Payment date: the day the dividend lands in your account
Important to know: on the ex-date the share price normally falls by the amount of the dividend. Example: share at €100, dividend €4 → price on the ex-date: approx. €96. So you get €4 in dividends, but your share is worth €4 less – a zero-sum game.
Did you know? On the ex-dividend date, the share price theoretically falls by the amount of the dividend. Quality stocks usually recover within a few days or weeks.
