What you should have done by 30: emergency fund, ETF savings plan running, occupational disability insurance, tax returns filed, pension statement read. Here's how to check your status.

Your financial status check at 30 (Germany):

1. Emergency fund built? ✅

• 3–6 months' net salary in an overnight money account
• If not: start NOW – €200/month by standing order

2. ETF savings plan running? ✅

• At least 10–20% of net pay in a world ETF
• If not: open a securities account TODAY – 20 minutes

3. Occupational disability insurance taken out? ✅

• The EARLIER, the CHEAPER! At 30: approx. €70/month. At 40: approx. €120/month
• One in four becomes occupationally disabled during their working life

4. Tax return filed? ✅

• Average refund of €1,095
• Possible up to 4 years retroactively!

5. Read your pension information letter? ✅

• Arrives by post every year from age 27 (with 5+ contribution years)
• Calculate and close your pension gap

6. Used capital-forming benefits + employer contributions? ✅

• Capital-forming benefits: up to €40/month from the employer
• Company pension: the employer must add at least 15%

Bonus: term life insurance

• If you have a partner/children or a mortgage: a must
• €200,000 cover: approx. €15–25/month

Did you know? If you invest €200/month in an ETF from age 25, you'll have around €500,000 at 65. If you only start at 35: just €240,000. Starting 10 years later = more than €260,000 less. EVERY year counts.
