The journey of money through the millennia:
~3,000 BC: barter – a cow for grain, a fur for tools
~1,500 BC: shells, salt and pearls as means of payment (the word "salary" comes from Latin "salarium", from "salt")
~700 BC: first coins of gold and silver (Lydia, today's Turkey)
~1,000 AD: first banknotes in China
1668: first banknotes in Europe (Sweden)
1871: the gold mark becomes Germany's first uniform currency
2002: introduction of euro cash
2009: Bitcoin – the first digital currency without a state
Did you know? The word “salary” comes from the Latin “salarium” – Roman soldiers were partly paid in salt because salt was so valuable at the time.
