Pet costs

The honest maths: a dog costs €1,000–2,000 a year, a cat €500–1,000. Over a pet's whole life: €15,000–30,000. Vet costs are often underestimated.
What pets really cost (per year, Germany):
Dog:
• Food: €500–1,000
• Vet (vaccinations, check-ups): €200–400
• Insurance (liability + surgery): €200–500
• Dog tax: €50–200 (depending on the city)
• Accessories, grooming: €100–300
• Total: €1,050–2,400/year
Cat:
• Food: €300–600
• Vet: €150–300
• Litter: €100–200
• Total: €550–1,100/year
Over a whole animal's life: dog (12 years): €12,600–28,800. Cat (16 years): €8,800–17,600. And that's without major operations (a cruciate ligament operation on a dog costs €2,000–4,000).
Did you know? In 2022 vet costs in Germany rose by an average of 20% due to the new fee schedule (GOT). Surgery insurance for dogs (from €15/month) can save thousands of euros.
