ISIN
Investierenab 9 J.
International Securities Identification Number – the unique identifier of every security worldwide. 12 characters: country code + 9 characters + check digit. Example: IE00B4L5Y983 (iShares MSCI World).
The ISIN is the unique identification number of a security – like an ID card number for shares and ETFs.
Structure (12 characters):
• 2 letters: country code (IE = Ireland, DE = Germany, US = USA)
• 9 characters: national identifier
• 1 digit: check digit
Examples:
• IE00B4L5Y983: iShares Core MSCI World ETF (Ireland)
• DE0005140008: Deutsche Bank share (Germany)
• US0378331005: Apple share (USA)
Why important?
• When buying an ETF: enter the ISIN instead of searching by name (unambiguous!)
• "IE" at the start = domiciled in Ireland (often tax-efficient for EU investors)
• "LU" = Luxembourg, "DE" = Germany
Did you know? Most large ETFs start with “IE” (Ireland) – because thanks to its double taxation agreement with the USA, Ireland pays only 15% instead of 30% withholding tax on US dividends.
