Playing shop

Kinderab 5 J.
The best money exercise for young children: buying and selling with play money or real coins. Trains arithmetic, communication and handling money.

How to turn the play shop into a learning experience:

What you need: empty packaging as goods, price tags (Post-its), play money or real coins, a small table as the "shop".

Learning goals:

✅ Recognise and count coins
✅ Read and compare prices
✅ Work out change
✅ Practise "please" and "thank you"
✅ Make decisions ("Do I have enough money for both?")

Tip: swap roles! Sometimes your child is the shopkeeper, sometimes the customer. As the shopkeeper, they learn to set prices and give change – even more challenging!

Did you know? Educators count playing shop among the “top 5 learning games” for children aged 4 to 8. It combines maths, language and social skills.
