Children's account

Bankingab 5 J.
Possible from age 7 in Germany, recommended from 12. Most banks offer free youth accounts with a card and app. That's how children learn to handle digital money.

From what age, and which account for children (Germany)?

From 0 years: savings account (parents open it in the child's name. For cash gifts, saving child benefit)

From 7 years: current account possible (with the consent of both parents. Credit basis only, no overdraft)

From 12 years: recommended (own debit card, online banking app, pocket money by standing order)

What to look out for?

✅ Free of charge (youth accounts are almost always free)
✅ Own card (girocard or debit card)
✅ App (so children can see their balance)
✅ No overdraft possible (protection against going into the red)
✅ Parents have access/an overview

Good providers: Commerzbank (Startkonto), ING (Girokonto U28), DKB (U18 account), comdirect (JuniorGiro).

Did you know? Legally, the money in a children's account belongs to the CHILD. Parents only manage it in trust and may not use it for their own purposes.
