Small amounts, big effect

Sparenab 5 J.
€5 a day seems harmless. But: €5 × 365 = €1,825/year. In 20 years: €36,500. In an ETF at 7%: more than €90,000. Small amounts aren't small – they're huge.

The "latte factor" (coined by David Bach) shows: small daily expenses add up to gigantic sums.

€5/day – what sounds harmless:

• €5/day = €1,825/year
• In 10 years: €18,250
• In 20 years: €36,500
• In 30 years: €54,750

Invested in an ETF (7% return):

• €5/day = €152/month in an ETF savings plan:
• After 10 years: €26,400
• After 20 years: €79,300
• After 30 years: €184,000

Typical "€5 expenses":

• Coffee to go: €3.80
• Filled roll from the bakery: €4.50
• Energy drink + snack: €4.00
• Taxi instead of bus for a short trip: €8.00

The message is NOT "never drink coffee again". The message is: be aware of what small amounts mean in the long run. And: even €50–100/month in an ETF makes a huge difference over decades.

Did you know? Warren Buffett drinks a $3 McDonald's coffee every morning – instead of a $6 Starbucks. He says he doesn't like paying twice as much for the same caffeine.
