Developing consumer skills

Familieab 9 J.
Children learn to shop consciously: see through advertising, compare prices, recognise impulse buys and distinguish between wants and needs.

Consumer competence means dealing with consumption consciously and critically. Children are bombarded with advertising every day – on YouTube, TikTok, TV and in shops. They need tools to make smart decisions.

What children should learn:

✅ Recognise advertising: "Why do they show such happy children in adverts?"
✅ Compare prices: same product, different shops – what costs how much where?
✅ 24-hour rule: wait a day before bigger purchases
✅ Do I really need it? Ask three questions: Do I need it? Do I have something similar? Will I still be happy about it tomorrow?

Did you know? By the age of 18, children see an estimated 350,000+ advertising messages. Learning to question advertising critically is one of the most important financial skills.
