Account for the self-employed

Bankingab 13 J.
As a self-employed person you need a separate business account: it separates private and business finances (important for taxes!). Free options in Germany: N26 Business, Kontist, Fyrst.

Why a separate business account (Germany)?

✅ Clean for tax purposes: the tax office wants to see business and private transactions kept separate
✅ Overview: see immediately how much money is in the business
✅ Bookkeeping: much easier when everything is in one account
✅ Professional: invoices with a business account look more trustworthy

Free business accounts:

• N26 Business: €0, debit card, 0.1% cashback. Limitation: no overdraft, no direct debits
• Kontist: €0 (basic), automatic tax pot function (!), ideal for freelancers
• Fyrst (Deutsche Bank): €0 (basic), IBAN with a Deutsche Bank BIC
• FINOM: €0, with integrated invoicing

Paid but good:

• Holvi: €9/month, automatic bookkeeping
• Commerzbank: from €9.90/month, classic with branches

Tip: Kontist has a unique feature: it automatically calculates your expected tax burden and puts the money into a separate sub-account. That way you're protected against tax back payments.

Did you know? Some banks forbid business use of personal accounts in their terms. Business accounts cost €5–30/month. Some providers such as N26 Business offer free versions.
